Crane Hire for Power Stations & Electrical Infrastructure
Mobile cranes, rigging and lift planning for power station construction and maintenance, with experience on Eskom’s Medupi, Kusile and Lethabo power stations.
Power Station Experience
Power generation is some of the most demanding lifting work there is. The components are big and heavy, the structures are tall, and maintenance has to fit into tight outage windows. JMB Cranes has worked on three of South Africa’s major coal-fired power stations:
- Medupi Power Station (Lephalale, Limpopo): cranes supplied for construction.
- Kusile Power Station (near eMalahleni, Mpumalanga): cranes supplied for construction.
- Lethabo Power Station (near Vereeniging and Sasolburg): maintenance projects.
Read more about our Eskom projects. That experience is why we offer dedicated crane hire for power station construction and maintenance.
Construction Lifts
Building or extending generating plant means a long run of planned lifts, often with several cranes working on the same site. Typical lifts include:
- Structural steel for boiler houses, turbine halls and support structures
- Ducting, pipework, cable racks and access platforms
- Placing pumps, fans, motors and other plant equipment
- Site establishment: offices, containers and stores
Maintenance and Outages
Planned outages are when power stations do their major maintenance, and every hour of outage time counts. Components have to be removed, sent for repair or replaced, and reinstalled within the window. The lifting side of an outage goes best when crane positions, lift plans and rigging are agreed before the unit comes offline, so the crews can start straight away. Our heavy lift projects team plans complex and multi-crane lifts, and our rigging services handle slinging and load handling inside the plant.
Electrical Infrastructure: Substations and Transformers
The same lifting disciplines apply beyond the power station fence. Typical electrical infrastructure lifts include:
- Transformers and reactors, placed onto plinths or removed for replacement
- Switchgear, kiosks and mini-substations
- Steel structures, gantries and busbar supports
- Cable drums and other heavy materials for network projects
These lifts need accurate weights, careful crane positioning and strict clearances. Exclusion zones around energised equipment are set by the site owner, and the lift plan must work within them. Transformers in particular are often heavier than they look, and may need a larger crane or a combination of crane lifting and rigging. Tell us about your project and we will recommend the right approach.
The Right Crane and Crew
- Mid-range mobile cranes such as our 80 ton mobile crane for steelwork and equipment at height.
- Heavy cranes of up to 220 tons for the largest components.
- Knuckle-boom crane trucks to deliver and place smaller equipment. See our knuckle-boom crane truck hire and wider crane truck hire service.
- Experienced operators and riggers on every job.
Where We Work
JMB Cranes is based in Klipriver, south of Johannesburg, close to the Vaal and its industrial and generating sites, and takes on project work nationwide. See our full crane hire services and mobile crane hire.
FAQ: Crane Hire for Power Stations
Q1: Have you worked on Eskom power stations?
A: Yes. We supplied cranes for the construction of Medupi and Kusile, and carried out maintenance projects at Lethabo.
Q2: Can you support a planned outage?
A: Yes. Get in touch as early as possible so the cranes, crews and lift plans are confirmed before the outage starts.
Q3: Can you lift transformers?
A: Transformer lifts depend on the weight, the plinth position and the access on site. Share the transformer weight and a site layout, and we will advise on the crane or crane-and-rigging combination needed.
Q4: Do you supply riggers as well as cranes?
A: Yes. Cranes come with experienced operators, and rigging teams can be added for slinging, load handling and equipment moves.
Q5: Do you work outside Gauteng?
A: Yes. Our power station work has included Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Free State, and we take on project work nationwide.
Conclusion
Proven on South Africa’s power stations
From construction lifts at Medupi and Kusile to maintenance at Lethabo, JMB Cranes brings power station experience to every generation and electrical infrastructure project. To plan your lifts, call Janet on 082 828 7146 or our office on 011 021 1038. We also provide mobile crane hire for mining.
