Mobile Crane Hire for Mining
Cranes, operators and riggers for mine construction, maintenance and equipment changes, backed by mining project experience in South Africa, Botswana and Lesotho.
Lifting Support for Mines and Processing Plants
Mines run on heavy equipment, and almost every major piece of it needs a crane at some point: when it is installed, when it is maintained, when a component fails and when it is finally removed. On a mine, downtime is expensive, so the lift has to be planned properly and done safely the first time. JMB Cranes provides mining crane hire with mobile cranes, crane trucks, experienced operators and rigging teams for that work.
Mining Work We Have Done
- Redpath Mining (Bosjesspruit, Ilangabi, Mpumelelo and Dishaba mines): setting up onsite offices, and installing and removing a drill rig and reamer, which was the largest reamer in Africa at the time. Read about the Redpath Mining project.
- Jwaneng Mine, Botswana: crane services for the building and maintenance of dragline buckets at one of the world’s richest diamond mines.
- Letseng and Kao mines, Lesotho: including the safe stripping and removal of the old crusher at the Kao diamond mine.
- Emergency conveyor repairs: a weekend call-out to a mine for urgent conveyor repairs, carried out with a Tadano 30-ton crane.

Typical Mining Lifts
- Conveyor structures, pulleys, drives and idler sections
- Crusher, mill and screen components during installation, relining or removal
- Pumps, motors and gearboxes on the plant and underground support infrastructure
- Drill rigs, reamers and other shaft and development equipment
- Steel structures, chutes and platforms for plant construction and upgrades
- Site offices, containers and workshops when a site is being established
- Large components for draglines and other mining machinery
Planned Maintenance and Breakdowns
Most mining lifts fall into two groups. Planned maintenance happens in a fixed shutdown window, so the cranes, rigging and lift plans must be ready before the plant stops. Planning early means the lifts take hours, not days, out of that window. Breakdowns can’t be planned, and what matters then is getting the right size of crane and a capable crew to site quickly, as on our weekend conveyor call-out.
Matching the Crane to the Mine
Our fleet runs from compact cranes and knuckle-boom crane trucks up to heavy Tadano machines of 160 and 220 tons, so we can size the crane to the component instead of over- or under-equipping the job:
- Crane trucks for delivering and placing spares and smaller components. See our knuckle-boom crane truck hire and wider crane truck hire service.
- Mid-range cranes such as our 80 ton mobile crane for heavier components and lifts at height.
- Heavy cranes and engineered lifts for the largest components, handled as heavy lift projects.
- Rigging teams for slinging, load handling and moving equipment where a crane alone can’t reach.
Working on a Mine Site
Every mine runs its own safety system, which typically includes site inductions, permits to work, exclusion zones and approved lift plans for critical lifts. Ground conditions on haul roads, stockpile areas and plant terraces also need checking before a crane sets up. We plan each lift with the mine’s engineering and safety teams, so the crane, crew and paperwork are ready when the work starts.
Where We Work
JMB Cranes is based in Klipriver, south of Johannesburg, and takes on mining work across South Africa. Our projects have also taken us across the border to Botswana and Lesotho. Find out more about our crane hire services and mobile crane hire.
FAQ: Mobile Crane Hire for Mining
Q1: Do you work on mines outside Gauteng?
A: Yes. We take on mining work across South Africa, and have completed mining projects in Botswana and Lesotho.
Q2: Can you help with an urgent breakdown?
A: Contact us as soon as the breakdown happens. We have handled emergency mine call-outs, including weekend work, and will confirm availability and the right crane for the job.
Q3: Do you supply riggers as well as cranes?
A: Yes. Our cranes come with experienced operators, and we can add a rigging team for slinging, load handling and equipment moves.
Q4: What size crane do mining lifts need?
A: Anything from a crane truck for spares to a heavy crane for major components. Share the component weight, lift height and the distance from where the crane can stand, and we will size it.
Q5: Can you plan lifts for a shutdown?
A: Yes. Planning ahead of a shutdown is the best way to keep lifts quick and safe within the window. The earlier we are involved, the better.
Conclusion
